Furies of Calderon is a sword and horses fantasy novel written by Jim Butcher. It is book one in the Codex Alera, and takes place in the fictional country of Alera, in the small Calderon Valley. In the country of Alera, humans have unique bonds with furies - the spirits of nature. These furies allow people to perform tasks usually seen as impossible, such as flying or throwing a boulder. The story follows a teenage boy named Tavi, who has no fury bond of his own. While searching for some lost farm animals, Tavi stumbles upon an invasion plot from the barbarian tribes just outside of the valley. From that point forward, the story becomes a rush of excitement and action, leaving the reader guessing and predicting how the plot will unfold. I really enjoyed this book. It was inspired by the greats: Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Lloyd Alexander, etc. Although it is heavily inspired by all of these great authors, Furies of Calderon is its own original story. There may be a few cliches here and there, but twists fill the pages and deep characters lead the plot. I recommend this book to anyone interested in classic sword and horses fantasy, and to people who enjoy reading series. It's an amazing read!

Having read one on Jim Butcher's novels and your review of yet another of his works, I am excited to download it and make it a summer read. Your reviews are spot on, honest, and shared with just enough information to entice someone to run out an purchase the books. Well done Max!
