Rithmatist Review

Updated: Apr 21, 2019

The Rithmatist is another novel by Brandon Sanderson. It follows a character named Joel, who lives in an alternate reality version of America. In this America, there are special members of society known as "Rithmatists". Rithmatists are able to use chalk and symbols to battle against the wild chalklings (2d creatures that mercilessly attack humans). Joel wants to be a Rithamtist more than anything, but unfortunately missed his chance as a child. When students at the Rithmatic school begin to go missing and Joel is selected to assist in the investigation, he knows that it is his time to shine. The Rithmatist is a short(ish) novel, only about 350 pages, but is still able to tell an interesting and fully fleshed out story. There are plot twists and mysteries, and (most importantly) a really interesting magic system. People use chalk to draw geometric shapes and lines, in order to duel each other for fame. The Rithamist is a really interesting book, and (although I am still waiting for book two to come out) I highly recommend it to anybody looking for a more modernized fantasy.
