The Fold

While searching for books to read, I came across The Fold, by Peter Clines, a science fiction novel about teleportation and alternate dimensions.

When genius professor Mike Erikson is brought in to help a group of researchers solve a mystery, he has no clue what he is getting himself into. These researchers have worked to create a machine that "folds dimensions" and transports people instantaneously from location to location. While at first, the whole scenario seems miraculous, small holes in the researcher's explanations begin to pop up. A seemingly stable test subject returns home and attempts to murder his wife. A researcher walks out the machine horribly mutilated and torn apart, later dying in the ambulance to the hospital. As these events continue to happen, Mike realizes that the "folding machine" is not what they all thought it was, and it could only be a short amount of time before something comes out of the machine that causes a widespread disaster.

For the most part, I enjoyed reading The Fold. The first 2/3 or so of the book were incredibly interesting, and kept me engrossed, predicting what might happen next. The fact that there was a machine that could connect alternate dimensions was an exciting concept to me. Unfortunately, the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the book took a drastic turn that took some time to get used to. At some points it almost felt disconnected from the rest of the plot that had built up, crazy events taking place that came out of seemingly nowhere.

While this was something that I disliked about the book, I don't see it as a reason to not read it at all. I would still recommend this book to science fiction fans, as long as they remember to stick with the plot through the confusing and surprising sections. I had a good time reading this book, and while it is far from being on my favorites list, The Fold is an enjoyable read and interesting science fiction novel.
