Circe Book Review

Updated: Apr 21, 2019

As you have probably guessed by now, I am a huge fan of fantasy novels. Circe, by Madeline Miller, is an amazing story of Circe, the witch from The Odyssey. Circe is the daughter of the titan Helios and an ocean nymph. Throughout her life, she is shunned as the "imperfect" and "boring" daughter, causing her to become a social outcast. Eventually, Zeus learns of her powers and banishes her to a remote island in the middle of the ocean. From there on, Circe lives her immortal life on this island, meeting famous Greek heroes and helping them along their quests. I really enjoyed this book as it gives a new viewpoint to all of the well known Greek myths such as The Odyssey, the Minotaur, and Jason and the Argonauts (The Golden Fleece). If you are a fan of Greek mythology then you are sure to enjoy this book. Even while providing new perspectives to the stories, the god and hero characters stay true to their original mythological characteristics and personalities. Athena is still vengeful, Zeus is still prideful, and Daedalus is still a brilliant inventor. Circe is a very story driven book, with a deeply developed cast of characters. I highly recommend that you read this novel.
