Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe Book Review

Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe is a compelling realistic fiction book that deals with heavy topics while still providing humor and entertainment. The book follows a high schooler named Cliff Hubbard, who is so huge that he was nicknamed "Neanderthal" by his peers. Cliff is a huge loser (literally), and is constantly getting bullied by the popular kids, namely Aaron Zimmerman. Then, after Aaron experiences a near-death accident, he claims that he met God and needs Cliff to help him solve the problems within the school. Aaron and Cliff work together to reignite an English teacher's love of teaching, uncover the identity of an infamous hacker, confront the biggest bully at the school, and more. I really enjoyed reading this book, as it follows the lives of much less-than-perfect characters while still having large spots of development and side characters. Neanderthal Opens the Door to the Universe is a fairly short read, only containing about 400 pages, but it still manages to fit a deep story-line in, shedding light on issues such as suicide and homophobia. All in all, you should read this book. It is highly enjoyable, has great characters, and isn't a super long read that takes up a ton of time.
