Elantris Book Review

Updated: Apr 21, 2019

Another novel by Brandon Sanderson, Elantris is an in depth story that manages to keep you on the edge of your seat without resorting to crazy action scenes and intense firefights. Taking place in a medieval fantasy world, Elantris was the city of gods. The inhabitants had powers to change garbage into fresh food, and heal otherwise fatal wounds. Then, disaster struck. Every citizen of Elantris was hit with a curse that rendered them "undead". Their hearts didn't beat, and any injury they received would never heal. The story follows three main characters: Raoden, Sarene, and Hrathen. Raoden is the crown prince of Arelon (the country where Elantris resides), and is suddenly struck with the same curse that hit every Elantrian. Sarene is the princess of a neighboring country -Teod- and was betrothed to Raoden, until his "death". Hrathen is a Derethi priest of the Fjordell empire, sent to Arelon and given three months to convert every citizen or else they would be destroyed. Unlike many other books by Brandon Sanderson, Elantris is rooted more in politics than in war and action. The magic system involves a complex system of drawing hieroglyphics, and the characters are all trying to peacefully achieve their goals. The character interactions are funny, along with plot mysteries and unexpected twists. Every character in this story is well developed, and really helps the reader to imagine who they would be in real life. All in all, Elantris is an amazing book, and it should definitely be added to any fantasy fan's reading list.
