Ready Player One

Updated: Aug 24, 2020

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is an amazing book, and personally, one of my favorite books I have ever read. I have read this book around 6 times now in the past 4 years, and I have yet to get bored. This story takes place in a future dystopia where all anybody wants to do is hole up in the virtual reality world known as the OASIS. After the creator of the OASIS dies with no heirs, he leaves an elaborate "Easter egg hunt" for players to win his assets. The victor of this contests walks away with over half of a trillion dollars. The puzzle is completely based around 1980s pop culture and references, such as Back to the Future, Pac-Man, Wargames, and more. Contestants must solve puzzles and pass test to ensure they are worthy of this massive sum of money. The story follows a teenager named Wade, who lives in near poverty in a trailer park type area called "The Stacks." He is a member of a group known as "gunters" (egg hunters), and is determined to find that prize, no matter what. The book is extremely action-packed, with elaborate puzzles and clues, along with a hint of romance. It was recently made into a movie (directed by Steven Spielberg), which unfortunately follows the book only in the most basic of details. I strongly recommend you read this book, as it is not very long (about 400 pages), and has a great storyline that never seems to disappoint.
