Scythe Book Review

Updated: Apr 21, 2019

Scythe is an amazing science fiction novel that takes place in a type of future utopia where death has been eradicated. Humans can no longer die naturally, only rendered in a revivable state known as “deadish”. As a result of this eradication of death, the human population has grown out of control and needs to be reduced. An order of normal people, now known as Scythes, were chosen for this mission. They are to “glean” a certain quota of people a year (who die for real, not deadish) in order to ensure that the population stays within a reasonable range. The Scythes can take apprentices, in order to pass on the “art” of gleaning, and train successors of a new age. This is where the main characters of the story come in. Citra and Rowan are both chosen to be the apprentices to the honorable Scythe Faraday. They must learn to be a “human weapon”, and compete with each other to gain this job that neither wants. I love this book, and have read it two times now. It is a great story about a seemingly perfect future, and how even utopias aren’t all they are cut out to be. I highly recommend this book, as it is not too long, and follows some very interesting topics, such as A.I and death.
